Press release
In «Mapping Information Society and its Discontents» !Mediengruppe Bitnik trace the current
state and conditions of the global «information society». In different maps show factors,
from the global distribution of communications technologies to press freedom or alphabetisation, which are
decisive for the participation in information society.
Different statistics, published by UN-Organisations, NGOs and State Organistaions, are taken as a basis for
the world maps exhibited. All the statistics used show one organisations point of view towards information
society and thus shows that data collection and analysis essentially also means data interpretation.
!Mediengruppe Bitnik collects statistics on information society and using a mapping software which
it developed for this purpose converts the statistics into world maps. The maps generated through
the software differ from established geographical maps: The statistical data is assigned directly to
the territorial area of the respective country. Consequently countries which have high values in
a particular data set take up more room on the map. Small values let a countries territorial area shrink
together until, in extreme examples, it disappears from the face of the earth entirely.
«Mapping Information Society and its Discontents» does not provide a definition of
«information society». Rather it shows the prevailing power structures in information society and
makes the basic conditions and framework apparent in which «information society» takes place.
