ASCII-ART
Intetactive installation
Ars Electronica 2003
6th - 11th September 2003
Linz, Austria
|
The typewriter, that outdated writing machine, is combined with its successor the computer to
form an input-output interface. Through this interface a picture is taken of
the users face which is then converted to ASCII and dictated to him/her
through text-to-speech. The user then types their portrait on the typewriter.
|
ImageWriter is an examination of high-tech vs.
low-tech and confronts the computer with the typewriter. Unlike ASCII art
produced by a computer and a printer, the ASCII art produced by means of a typewriter is unique and each picture an original.
